The Other Ones

The Other Ones - Holiday

This is not the post Grateful Dead band The Other Ones. This is the Australian expatriates in Berlin in the 80s band with the same moniker. The production is dated but I still fancy the chorus quite a bit. You'll be surprised by how much you end up loving this song which was a worldwide smash in 1987.

The Herms

The Herms - The Organization

There are two things to this song. Only two. One is the phlegmatic talk-singing about the facelessness of post-WWII modernization. The other is how the bassline plays disco hopscotch in octaves as a counterpoint to the talk-singing.

The Herms on the web.

The Herms on myspace (and another version of this song).

Figurines - Race You

I keep downloading stuff from other blogs and it's like pulling teeth trying to find something I like. But what I've heard from these Danish brethren so far, it works. More files at their site including a video of this song.

Moondog

Moondog - Lament 1 (Bird's Lament)

Lament I (Bird´s Lament) was written in honor of Charlie Parker, on hearing of his death. It is a chaconne, a four-bar accompaniment that is repeated over and over with a free melodic line over it, played by an alto sax, Bird´s instrument, with an obligato played on a baritone sax. Bird used to stop by my door-way back in 1951-2 and talk about music. One night I met him in Times Square and shook a shaking hand, not realizing that would be the last time we would meet.

Isolée

Isolée - Beau Mot Plage

This is one of those long minimalist experimental deals where my patience typically expires after 13 seconds. Been sitting on my computer for a good spell, ripening. And recently blossomed. Good late night background ambience. Isolée offers more at his site for your listening pleasure.
