The Ponys

The Fortunes

The Fortunes - You've Got Your Troubles
This is a song about loss. About two and half minutes in, it climaxes with a sad and lonely voice that serves as a counterpoint to the melody (the best part). The lonely voice is reaching out, because he knows what it's like. This song was also a radio hit from 60s and part of the British Invasion. Another thing about this song is that I love it.

The Clears

The Clears are a now defunct late 90s synth-pop outfit from Memphis. A bit more info here. The singer is quite opposed to something that God apparently wants him to do. I'm not really sure what "it" is and I don't get the impression that the singer knows either. But I like his unapologetic defiance. Anyway, catchy song.

Pedestrian

Formally, "The Toss & Turn" is all about appropriation: jel's music is essentially modeled after raw, early '60s novelty dance tunes (like "The Funky Penguin") and the rapping is in the late-'80s, New York vein. Thematically, the lyrics modify and in some cases invert the associations of those two genres, so that it becomes a swingy, up-tempo song about loss, a conscientiously clubby song about solitude, and a clearly, coldly rapped song about anxiety. (written by The Pedestrian)
This track keeps sneaking around my iTunes wanting to get posted. More about Pedestrian and Anticon here

Mill Race

Mill Race - Riding the Root Canal
"A Sci-fi Country-Western concept album. Old analog synth and spacey pedal steel featured. Dentist cowboys, lost wanderers, disgruntled bureaucrats and asteroids come and go." (more songs and info at the Mill Race myspace page or you can secure your own copy of the album here).
Thanks to Keith for the heads up. The part where the strings come in is haunting and magnificent.

Zooey

There's a lot of inertia working against this song for the first minute and a half. A lot. And then it stops, regroups, finds itself, and blasts off. Well done, Zooey.
Zooey - Endless Summer of the Beaver
This was the first Zooey song I heard, courtesy of 3hive. It wins because it's called "Endless Summer of the Beaver" and because it sounds like childhood just like Boards of Canada sometimes sounds like childhood.
Zooey has generously made many of his songs available for download at his trove. There you might find a pleasant homage to The Beach Boys and a cover of an old Weezer b-side.
Also, cheers to Alan at sixeyes for the link.

Faux Pas

Cup of Wonder: Simply the lost great bastard disco hit that Jethro Tull never had. A blaxploitation horn blast cues the French funk drummer to punish the skins before a droid extracts itself from the workshop to stutter a weird solo. Warning: contains actual Jethro Tull. (from the Faux Pas website)
This track shut down my critical faculties and had me moving within 30 seconds.
