Bon Savants

Bon Savants - Atomic Age

Sometimes this thing happens where you need to listen to a song. For example, it's happening right now and you need to listen to this song. It is golden and anthemic and deluxe.

I am excited about the Bon Savants. No album yet because they are a bunch of little teases, teasing you with their myspace charm and Pixies-esque hooks.

Starlight Mints

Starlight Mints - Submarine #3

In case you don't know the Starlight Mints, that's why I put this up. If you're a fan of the violin and cello working together in chorus, you'll like. They've been having a bit of a Renaissance lately in my car and apparently they're working on a new record. More tracks at epitonic.

TBA (aka Natalie 'Tusia' Beridze)

TBAannule.jpg

TBA - Smashed

If your wont is to delete music that doesn't grab you within the first minute (as is my wont), I urge you to disregard that urge. The ambience and melody of this music are evenly layered. Does that make it Marxist? I don't know. All I know is that when I first heard it a few hours ago I was compelled to listen again and again.

As far as I can tell, TBA is a part of Goslab, a multimedia collective of artists who have roots in Tbilisi, Georgia. My searches for info have yielded naught, save a few cryptic tidbits. She is married to Thomas Brinkmann, techno trailblazer and founder of the Max Ernst record label in Cologne, Germany. On occasion, she collaborates with Gogi.ge.org who is also a member of Goslab.

Thanks to Abdul who sent me this track and info.

The Happy Bullets

The Happy Bullets - Drinkin' on the Job

Psychedlic pop is what we call this. This is the kind of thing that would be a part of E6, if E6 wasn't defunct. Stuff's catchy. I strongly recommend downloading "The Vice and Virtue Ministry" either at their Myspace page or their Official site.

Apparently the name "The Happy Bullets" refers to the celebratory activity of firing bullets into the Texas night whilst inebriated.

Ultra Vivid Scene

Ultra Vivid Scene - Candida

Such an excellent track, what with the cowbells and this lyric:

Blood will rise and blood will leap
To find a place where blood can speak
Cause blood will have its fun
With Candida on the run

Ultra Vivid Scene was an underappreciated 4AD band in the 90s. I found this album 12 or 13 years ago in the used bin in St. George, Utah. I sampled the first track "Candida" and that was the only thing I ever needed to listen to.

Ultra Vivid Scene = Kurt Ralske. As far as I know, UVS is now defunt and Kurt Ralske is doing other stuff.

Stereolab

Stereolab - Need to Be

What this song needs to be is in your iTunes. I've been debating for months about which Stereolab song to put up here, which song captures them best, which song is the best example of 3-songs-in-1, and so forth. It was too hard to make that decision. So it boiled down to which song I listen to the most. And there are so many little treasures and crescendos in this song, esp. in the second half. But I'm not going to ruin for you one of the joyful processes of music listening, the discovery process. Because, you know, I could if I wanted to.

And if you're one of those fans who used to love Stereolab but are really disappointed by every album since Cobra & Phases Group Play Voltage in the Milky Night, I guess that's okay.

Gogi Ge.Org

Gogi Ge.Org - Post Industrial Boys

Here we have an anthem for insomnia. Give it a go next time you're awake at 4:16 and hoping to fall sleep. It WORKS. I posted it over a year ago and clearly, it deserves another shot.

Iggy Pop

Iggy Pop - The Passenger

Okay, Iggy Pop. Whatever. It's a good song. It sounds like it would be something in a Wes Anderson movie. My friend in Sweden gave it to me. She said the part where he goes "La la la la la" makes her smile. I thought it was kind of sad. We're still friends though.

Randy Newman

Randy Newman - Train Ride

Things to not worry about: where this came from or why I put it up here. Just file it under the random piano piece I occasionally enjoy and be off. There is zero singing here. Just a pleasant crescendo. If you have a penchant for melodrama, the Ragtime soundtrack is a veritable treasure chest.

This is very excellent.
