Golden Shoulders - I Get Over

That Charla sure has a good voice (the Glaswegian Charla). You can hear it on this track.

What would be hilarious is if someone made a joke about this band's name (at last). Golden Shoulders come from Nevada City, CA and the lineup is largely in flux with the exception of the singer Adam who is always part of the show. He writes a good lyric. Everything you ever wanted to know about Go Shos, including pics, order info, and history w/ Joanna Newsom, is found over here.

The Busy Signals

The Busy Signals - The Freeway

A party record for people who never went to parties.

In the olden days this track was atop my 25 most frequently played tunes in iTunes. Then my Powerbook broke because Powerbooks are good for naught. Now it's making a comeback on my newer flashier PC. Try listening at 2:30 in the morning when you're driving home on the interstate (preferably by self).

Frog Eyes

Frog Eyes - The Oscillator's Hum

Frog Eyes - Time Reveals Its Plan At Poisoned Falls

This is one of those 25/75 deals. Where I love (love) 25% of their frenzied songs and 75% of them will never find their way to my stomach.

Wolf Parade

Wolf Parade - You Are A Runner And I Am My Father's Son

I saw these folks this weekend and that was some racket they made. My prediction is that the tension between the two singers (the guy in the front and the guy on the left) will eventuate in a premature breakup. But not after that tension renders a few more goood things. Their debut EP comes out in a week from tomorrow.

Then the Arcade Fire and Bell Orchestre got on stage and it was grand. All of those EP songs they have that are kind of "meh" somehow all of a sudden became really good. After the last encore Win went through the crowd to the venue entrance and contuned to perform. My friend witnessed that and said, "more like Arcade Foyer." Which was somewhat clever.

Midwife Crisis

Where is my husband?

Midwife Crisis - Cops and Kids

Midwife Crisis - Fight Fire

Midwife Crisis was a short-lived but conceptually taut and very engaging act that could have climbed charts and saved lives were it not for the mal-alligned stars. I'm not sure if the whole Christian motif thing was ironic or not but it certainly made folks turn heads and shake legs.

A congrats to Gian (the magnetic gentleman in the photo) who I hear made plans to tie knots. For the record, he wanted to name the band Body Burger.

Dizzee Rascal

You're too sensible for me, man

Dizzee Rascal - Dream

I've never been able to get excited about Dizzee Rascal but I'm pretty sure this video is one of the best things ever. It includes: sampling from South Pacific, notes perfectly out of tune, and breakin' puppets (amongst other pleasantries).

Beulah

Beulah - Burned By The Sun

So I finally got me 'ands on the Beulah documentary called A Good Band is Easy to Kill. The live performances are a good thing for folks like me who live in cities they never visited. The documentary is kind of a travelogue of their final tour with some charming and amusing moments. [insert elitist rant about what documentaries should be]

"Burned By The Sun" is a melancholy end-of-the-summer song that somehow didn't blow up on the charts. (observe the mandolin). It 's also on to that mix tape CD that Jason Lytle curated of songs that were dismissed by foolish radio DJs.

Air

Air - Remember (D. Whitaker Version)

I always thought this song was a bit tacky and loved it for that reason. This version (from the "Kelly Watch the Stars" single) is borderline John Williams-y and has even more saccharine. Which I'm okay with.
