Röyksopp - Someone Like Me

One thing about Norwegian musicians is: good job. I remember looking out the window as I flew over Norway and thinking that some of the trees I could see had never been seen by another soul. As a country, Norway clearly has the requisite isolation to produce something like this song, which is the stand out cut from the new album, The Understanding. More here.

Elks Skiffle Group

Elks Skiffle Group travel 32,000 light years to visit Blackpool, England, and make fab gear top 20 record like Beetles. Except we are not bugs!

Elks Skiffle Group - Beep Beep Cyberbaby

A good song if you can make it past the intro and enjoy Stereolab. Elks Skiffle Group = Puppets from outer space, so. Can't find much more info on them.

Swirlies

But this island has lost face slipping with each wave into the ocean

Swirlies - One Light Flashing I Love You

Swirlies - San Cristobal De Las Casas

Is another version of "One Light Flashing I Love You" at epitonic. And the decision to include "San Cristobal De Las Casas" in this post, clearly one of the best decisions I've ever made. Because listen to the racket these folk make. They been around for a good spell (since the early '90s) and as far as I know are still up to some of their same tricks, as well as some new ones.

Swirlies.

I, Monster

I, Monster - Heaven

Thanks to English for the intro to I, Monster. These blokes are from Sheffield and have a knack for making good music. Their most popular song "These are Our Children" sounds like something The Specials would invent if they were still in the business of inventing. This track here is cinematic and trip-hoppy. Both come from the album Neveroddoreven which, turns out, is a palindrome. Lately I've dabbled in creating my own palindromes:

A stupid palindrome is still a palindrome a still is palindrome stupid idiot.

I, Monster have a new album coming out this year.

Make-up

Make-up - I Am Pentagon

The Makeup is not averse to physical force, but we're really happy that rock and roll has become peaceful and urbane.

Whereas overt political messages in music usually ruin the music, not here. This is raspy psychedelic political gospel punk from Washington D.C. and it pretty much wins. (I think I got this from dallapozza, so thanks).

Scrabbel

Scrabbel - San Francisco

Scrabbel - Sena Song

Where is fancy bred, in the heart or in the head?

There is a treat that is sampled about 1:15 into "San Francisco." Can you identify the source? It went right through my ear until my brother pointed it out to me. I said "nope" when he first showed me but then listened more carefully and then I said "yup."

I first heard Scrabbel at Mystery & Misery which is a good resource for finding new under-the-radar kinds of things. I like the diversity of Scrabbel. They sample things. They play instruments. This works for the most part. I'm actually not too crazy about "Sena Song" for the first few minutes. It's kind of straightforward whatever. Then, at about 3:00, I'm still not too crazy about it, but I like.
