The Shadows

M. Ward played this number when I saw him a couple of weeks ago. It may be a bit syrupy for some, but the slide guitar puts me at ease. I didn't know what it was called and imitated it for a lot of people with my foolish voice in hopes of finding the title. I kept getting "Sleepwalkin'" by Modest Mouse and "a Richie Valens song." But nope on both of those. Close, but nope.
The original version (1959) is by two brothers from Brooklyn, Santo & Johnny. Ostensibly The Ventures cover it (in addition to about 50 other bands) but I can't find that. So here is a version by The Shadows, about whom I know almost nothing except that they were famous for "Apache," which is a hot buttery gem for another time.

Hi! I discovered this blog the other day, searching for ladybug transistor. I love the variety of music shared here. I dig the slide guitar.Posted by: Mindy at May 12, 2005 08:52 PM
dave. i have the ventures version if you want it. the johnny and santo version is the most popular one - you can find it on any of those "best of lowrider" albums - along with tequilla and like a thousand other awesome chicano rocks numbers. i think its on the la bamba soundtrack too. uhmm, so when are we practicing? mPosted by: michael at May 13, 2005 12:34 AM

Do you know about the covers project? It's prolly old news, but I think it's a good resource. http://coversproject.com/artist/shadowsPosted by: Mindy at May 13, 2005 04:14 PM
Brian Setzer also covered it his "Dirty Boogie" album.Posted by: at May 13, 2005 10:38 PM
if you keep finding obscure music, eventually you'll go back to the time when they could record on charcoal, when shovelled into the trains' engines, then played out in puffs from the steamstack. These were simpler times, though, so I don't know if you like lyrics about basic addition and maybe a rectangle. i don't you well enough to say, even though we've talked about most possible personal things.Posted by: pq. at May 25, 2005 11:19 AM
i like charcoal, if it's goodly done.Posted by: jimson at May 25, 2005 12:31 PM
not quite, you should wait and make your decision later when you have a bit more privacy.Posted by: pq. at May 25, 2005 01:29 PM
you don't understand. i'm motivated by wanting to be liked by other people. it's something i'm working on and it's terribly disconcerting.Posted by: jimson at May 25, 2005 04:18 PM
