The Saturday People

The Saturday People - Slipping Through Your Fingertips
The Saturday People - Upside Down Girl
These folk are from Washington Twee C and their music is like a lo-fi poppy seed that actually does its job. I don't know if they're still around or what. Info and more mp3's here. Get the song called "No Matter Where You Are" if bassline dissonance resonates with you.

Of Montreal

Of Montreal - Was Your Face a Head in the Pillow Case?
I saw Of Montreal a couple of nights ago while everybody else was at Bloc Party. Secondthought-wise, there haven't been any problems. Fun-wise, there haven't really been any problems either. This song was the first Of Montreal song I ever heard and it fishhooked me. So it was a pleasure to my eardrum to hear it live. I wish all of my friends would have been there instead of at damn Bloc Party which I heard was really good.
I wish tonight I would have never logged on to insomnia.com.

The Brunettes

The Brunettes - Loopy Loopy Love
You have to admit, love is pretty stupid. But worth it. But stupid.
Website here.

The Sea and Cake

The Sea and Cake - Lamont's Lament
The Sea and Cake - The Argument
I said awhile back I'd post some of this, so. Notice the percussion. A friend told me she's heard the original version of "The Argument." I thought this was the original version of "The Argument." An argument ensued. Does anyone know the truth about this?

Vitalic

I'm not into techno that much. Actually, I'm zero into techno. But Cowboy Dan faxed this over the other day and said I must needs give a listen. And it worked. It's French and it makes me move. Which is a good thing.

The High Llamas

The High Lllamas - Leaf and Lime
You were brought by train and cab
to this green and felted slab
Will these corners never end
I have tasks I must attend
The first entry on The House of Leaf & Lime was one year ago today. Today's entry contains the track which was the inspiration for the Leaf & Lime moniker. It's from the 2003 release Beet, Maize & Corn. If you don’t like this song or you snicker when you hear it, that’s too bad. The breezy pleasantries herein are what the weather on all Saturdays should be like. Early 20th century composition with a touch of the 50s. Kind of that thing where you’re barefoot and half asleep on your bed, the window’s open, a cool breeze coming through the window, iTunes on random, and then this comes on. That thing.
Thank you to pq who allows me to do this.
I am a fan of the High Llamas and would love to see them which I doubt will happen. Order Beet, Maize & Corn here.

The Shadows

M. Ward played this number when I saw him a couple of weeks ago. It may be a bit syrupy for some, but the slide guitar puts me at ease. I didn't know what it was called and imitated it for a lot of people with my foolish voice in hopes of finding the title. I kept getting "Sleepwalkin'" by Modest Mouse and "a Richie Valens song." But nope on both of those. Close, but nope.
The original version (1959) is by two brothers from Brooklyn, Santo & Johnny. Ostensibly The Ventures cover it (in addition to about 50 other bands) but I can't find that. So here is a version by The Shadows, about whom I know almost nothing except that they were famous for "Apache," which is a hot buttery gem for another time.

Rivers Cuomo
Rivers Cuomo - Tommorow (from the musical Annie)
This track was on Rivers' myspace page last summer until his lawyers told him to take it down because of Daddy Warbucks. The reason I'm posting it is because it is really good and it gives me hope that Rivers can still make a good thing.
I'm sad about the new Weezer album. It's total sausage. Actually, I've only heard a couple of songs and the iTunes snippets so maybe it will turn out to be great. Let me know. Matthew at Fluxblog (who writes with a deft and discriminating pen) posts a song and has good things to say. And then there's the 0.4 on Pitchfork which, how do you get 0.4? Why not 0.6 or 1.3? Or is that the joke?

Sam Prekop

I have returned from vacation. The highlight was hanging out with a barefoot mountain man in a cave while it rained. He caught a fish with his bare paw and taught me how to make a bed out of pine cones. I fell 7 pounds short of my goal to lose 7 pounds.
My gratitude to Cowboy Dan and Chatlas for their posts and the variety they bring. I currently flirt with the idea of having guest posts more frequently. It's a playful flirt at the moment and at this point it's hard to say what's going to happen. If you think I might like a song enough to post it, send it to: leafandlime@gmail.com.
Also, sorry the site was down for a couple of days but, you know, the internet.
And then there's this Sam Prekop track I found on some random compilation. He is a real musician. It seems effortless, what he does with this track. I imagine driving in a convertible near the sea when I listen to his music.
I think the next post will be a bit of The Sea and Cake, which I just decided is one of the best band names.

Gruff Rhys

Gruff Rhys - Epynt
Gruff Rhys - Pwdin Wy 2
(This is a guest post not by jim weed, but by chatlas.)
Gruff Rhys is the singer and main songwriter for the Super Furry Animals. He just released his first solo album and he sings it all in Welsh. Once someone posted something to the following effect on an internet message board: "Radiohead is SO modernist. The Furries are post-modernist." I thought that was good for an internet laugh in unison.
Now that we've calmed down, I should say that Gruff Rhys, like his band and his tongue, is from Wales. I saw him play for the hometown crowd in Bethesda, Wales a couple years ago. Well, what's not to like.
Although it's against the quota of a usual Leaf & Lime post, I've been convinced that I should post a Super Furry Animals song for reasons of a) context and b) because the Gruff Rhys songs were so short. So, have it:
Super Furry Animals - Keep the Cosmic Trigger Happy
(this one I had to edit to take out a couple minutes worth of damn end-of-album silence.)

Destroyer

It says Jim Weed posted this, but he's on vacation and I'm housesitting.
It's been a little over two years since I shared a Destroyer track with the internet. It feels good to be back.
This is the first Destroyer song I ever heard and I've digitized it from the 7" I got it on. It's not the best digitization, but you can pretend your computer's a record player when you listen to it.
Besides this one, there are two other recorded versions of this song (1 & 2), so if you're a collectionist you know what to do.
Sister, the world cannot hold us.
Brother, you can go your own way.

Wolf Parade

Another Montreal group and my favorite thing right now. Bass line is key. Singer has a pouty (get another word) voice which you may not like if you're into the kinds of voices that my dad is into. Also, probably the best website a band could have, conceptually speaking.
I am going away from the internet this week so Steven Bone and Cowboy Dan are going to update this place in my stead. They have both intro'd me to many treasures and I trust they'll do the same for you.
