Agata Kristi

Agata Kristi is a Russian goth band I found when I lived in St. Petersburg 10! years ago. I recently rediscovered them on allofmp3.com which is a treasure chest (a v. shady treasure chest). They have multiple catchy songs and unconventional chord progressions. There's a part on the chorus where you're expecting a minor chord and a major is played and I don't think that's ever been done. Ever. Posornaya Zvyezda is 10 or 11 years old and I think they're still making music.
Vot: Агата Кристи
(Est' li russkie druzia kotorie chitaiot etu erundu? Poshlite mne soobshchenie. Ya bez uspekha ishchu staruiu piesniu gruppy "Veselye Rebiata". Piesnia nasyvaietsia "Liubov'--Ogromnnaia Strana." Pomogite mne, por favor. Ili prosto skazhite priviet.)

The Cloud Room

The Cloud Room - Beatiful Mess
"Hey Now Now" is up here with good reason. It's v. catchy. I just got the album and it grows. The singer has a good story. He moved to NY to be a PA on a Jim Jarmusch film and when he got there they told him sorry but they filled the position. So instead of crying he started a band. He totally didn't miss out. Did you see Coffee and Cigarettes? It was no good except when RZA and GZA kept calling Bill Murray by his full name.

Leonard Cohen

Leonard Cohen - True Love Leaves No Traces
Dead Famous People - True Love Leaves No Traces
This is my second post in one week that has a picture of a ladies' man with a cigarette in his hand. That's insane!!!
The original version came out in 1977 on the album Death of a Ladies' Man. The cover was part of a Leonard Cohen Tribute called I'm Your Fan that came out around 1990 or 1991 (which also has a really good cover by the Pixies).

BC Camplight

BC Camplight - Blood and Peanut Butter
My two favorite things--in one song!!! J/K. I totally hate blood and I'm only so-so about PB.
This I stumbled across last week whilst listening to indie pop rocks radio or some such at a friend's house (thanks, Xanadi). When I heard the woman singing the chorus 1:23 into the song, my ears perked. Catchy pop. It reminds me of another song and it bothers my mind that I can't remember which song--maybe a Weezer b-side from the olden days when Weezer was good. If you know what song this reminds me of, please let me know the name of that song.
BC Camplight was at SXSW this year. From what I can gather, it is one man, Brian Christinzio, from Philadelpia.
More good tracks at the official site. Album comes out in July.

Serge Gainsbourg

Serge Gainsbourg - Je T'aime Moi Non Plus: Ballade de Johnny-Jane
My favorite thing right now. It tells a good story sans a lyric.

The Unicorns

The Unicorns - There Are No Answers
All this talk about The Unicorns lately. No answers. There aren’t any. Here’s an instrumental bit that was pointed out to me a while back (thanks pq). I saw them at Kilby last year and it was like going to band practice. Which was kind of disappointing because they could write a good ditty. ‘Tis a shame they no longer are.

Bunky

Bunky - Born To Be A Motorcycle
Thanks to damn MP3 blogs I recently ordered some new CDs. One of them was Born To Be A Motorcycle by Bunky. Usually when a band pops up on several MP3 blogs, that means the band might be good. This is not always the case but for the most part this is the case.
Bunky is a pop duo from San Diego. The name is a combination of Bunny and Monkey which is what they called each other when they were sweethearts. I'm not sure if they're still sweethearts. (note: Bunky is also a clown name). This song goes slow, then fast, then slow, then fast, then slow, which is a feature that was perfected by Black Francis.
More MP3s at the Bunky site.

The Specials

The Specials - International Jet Set
Forgot I had this. It comes from the album More Specials which came out 25(!) years ago. (Old people). You might think ska-bitty blah when you hear mention of The Specials. Not this song though. I don't know what it is other than excellent. I'm pretty cocksure of myself about this fact. There is kind of a spooky "Ghost Town" vibe going on. It is v. creative. My fave part = the interlude that starts at 2:03.
The Specials have a website.

Knife In The Water

Knife In The Water - Watch Your Back
Knife In The Water was a featured artist on Napster back in the olden days, like 5 years ago when file sharing changed everything. Say what you must, I'm a man with shallower pockets no thanks to file sharing. I bought this CD at Amoeba about three years ago. It's kind of mopey no-core. But for whatever reason (slide guitars are sad, yet put me at ease) I really really like it. Their newer album which I haven't heard yet is available on iTunes. Official web site here.

Les Sans Culottes

Les Sans Culottes - Tout Va Bien (I'm Alright)
Les Sans Culottes are a faux French band based in Brooklyn. The music is pretty sugary and it has some catchy little goodness to it. One of the band members goes by the moniker Celine Dijon and another goes by Jean Luc Retard. Which are funny and clever. You can get more at epitonic.
