Brazilian Girls

Brazilian Girls - Lazy Lover (AAC)

This outfit hails from NY and is not made up of Brazilian girls. There is one woman in the band who handles the singing. My brother intro'd me to them. Kind of a loungy, cluby, almost downbeat kind of thing going on. Album was just released (Feb. 1) and is liked by me.

Where to buy is here.

Dungen

Dungen - Lipsill

I'm glad the singing is in the native tongue, Swedish. My friend pq (who has disappeared from the face) intro'd me to this band. Don't know much about them. Allmusic.com describes their music as neo-psychedlic. He (or they?) was on the cover of the last issue of The FADER magazine which, apparently, is cutting edge. I thumbed through the issue and there was a bit on the Dears so maybe I should subscribe. The blurb about Dungen in The FADER says:

Dungen's Gustav Ejstes pulled himself out of a hellish self-inflicted exile by making a psychedelic folk masterpiece. Now that same album has dragged him back to the crossroads.

My favorite track is called "Du E För Fin För Mig" but it's too large a file for me to post, so buy the album.

David Bowie

David Bowie - Loving The Alien

This bit is not one of Bowie's more famous songs but it's pretty epic. Someone good should cover it. It sounds a bit dated production-wise but one of the good things about Bowie's songwriting is that it transcends the production. This is the opening track of the album Tonight which has the song "Blue Jean" and a cover of "God Only Knows." It reminds me of the summer of '85 when I got stitches in my chin.

Beulah B-Side

Beulah - Weight of My Tears

Next to the Pixies, this was probably the most disappointing band break up. That they didn't achieve more recognition still baffles. If you can think of something that is so blatantly good and nobody else seems to get it, that's how I feel about Beulah. I wonder if people have a tough time taking brass seriosuly. Or maybe it's too cheerful and fun-haters don't respond to cheerful. I don't know. Beulah is also responsible for what is perhaps the most perfect song ever: "If We Can Land A Man On The Moon, Surely I Can Win Your Heart."

This song is a on a B-side from the Coast is Never Clear and is about the stupor of being in love. And the accompanying pressure/anxiety. I like the cascading percussion. You can still get shirts and CDs directly from Beulah at their website. I've made multiple orders and had zero problems.

Klaus Nomi

Klaus Nomi - Total Eclipse (MP3)

This is the music playing in the background of the trailer for The Nomi Song, a documentary about German expatriate NY underground artist-performer extraordinairre, Klaus Nomi. His falsetto soprano vocals will make your ears perk. If you're into Xanadu, Ed Wood, and/or Pee Wee Herman, you'll want to fax this thing right onto your computer. Klaus was one of the first well-known people to die of AIDS and may have achieved a higher degree of celebrity had his life not been truncated.

You can get this album over to Amazon. It includes a rendition of "Lightning Strikes," which you may recognize from Eugene Levy's audition in Waiting for Guffman. Yeah. The album also has an aria from Saint-Saens' Samson et Delilah that he ostensibly performed at every show.

Dears

Dears - The Second Part

Another Montreal band. This is from the album No Cities Left which came out last year. I just got it in the mail today so I'm not sure which songs I'm going to like but this one sticks out so far. If you look at the sky in that picture, that's what this song sounds like. It has a church organ in it and that always wins. Plus, a saxophone. Buy the record at Insound.

LCD Soundsystem - Tribulations (AAC)

This Fischerspooner-y-sounding thing is from the new LCD Soundsystem. I have raving things to say about this album but I'm not going to say any of them right now because of: headache. I'm not much of a dancer-person except for about every 6 months I have a night where I really get into it. I want this song to be playing next time that happens.

You can pre-order it at Amazon. It comes out Feb. 15 unless you're in Yevropa where it came out last week.

Also, Arcade Fire is on Conan tonight.
