Urgent

Bloc Party - The Answer

These south London art-punks have been described as "urgent." And I have to admit, their music sounds like they are really in a hurry.

The New Hulabaloo

Animal Collective - April and the Phantom

Animal Collective - Winters Love

Dustin gave me these tracks a week or two ago and I keep returning to them and I'm not sure why. I wasn't excited when there was the initial hoopla and then all of a sudden it started working. It's sparse and sneaky and unassuming and will go right by you if you're not careful. "April and the Phantom" is off their first album Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished and "Winters Love" is from the most recent album "Sung Tongs."

Percussing

Out Hud - Hair Dude, You're Stepping On My Mystique

Every instrument in this track is a drum. Maybe some of these drums happen to have strings that make distorted sounds or are played with a bow, but they remain drums. All of the drums assembled together in their fluctuating synchronicities, staccatos, and severities creates a multi-layered roller coaster-like experience with some subtle build-ups and rather precipitous drops. I recommend this one for the car.

Many of the souls in Out Hud also belong to the outfit called !!!

The 15th

Wire - The 15th

Fischerspooner - The 15th

The original version of this song by Wire is timeless. Total cliche description but I'm tired right now and it's kind of true. I heard the Fischerspooner version before I heard the original and this is not a bad way to go if you aren't yet familiar. Thanks to Di for the Fischerspooner and Mike for the Wire.

Gravity's Bring Me Down

Heavenly - Space Manatee

Marine Research - Queen B

This is twee pop from England. Twee means "understandably annoying to most people." This music is springlike, chirpy, melancholic, and with a slight hint of edge. Heavenly eventually turned into Marine Research. I just learned this and it makes more sense than anything else in the world. Today wasn't the best day of the year for a guy on many levels and I feel like whining and I am annoyed by whining so this polarity within me only exacerbates the situation. And then "Space Manatee" came on (iTunes on random has proven to be a good adventure) and I felt a bit better. So I thought I might put it up here.
