School Has Started (Roast)

Systems Officer - Forever This Cyanide

No time for this blahgery. Here's one from one of Zach's (of Pinback) side projects.

Ratatatatat

Ratatat - Desert Eagle

Probably one of the best album covers ever to accompany this damn fine track. Behold.

Cool Band, Fool's Name

Gorky's Zygotic Mynci - Stood On Gold

When I was in Sand Iego this past week (where I went to the sea every day), C. Atlas and I swapped musical files and I got me 'ands on a chunk of Gorky's corpus. I've been a fan for a good spell. But apparently not because somehow this one slipped through muh fingers. The violin in this song is the true fool's fiddle.

Somehow in the last few days I managed to secure copies of a Beulah demo, the new Clinic, the upcoming Pinback (from Mike who got it from Jed who downloaded it off the Web), as well as some Gorky's and Super Furries (oh Wales!) from the olden days. So there's that.

Comments Working Again!

The Mai Shi - Power To The People

So we celebrate with high energy shout-sass. Kind of a Blood Brothersy sounding politico-rant. I heard they were in SLC the day after they played which is kind of a roast.

Zlirg

I'm not tired of singers who sound like Zlirg but are aren't. So I present the flamboyant melodramatic flare of Suede.

Suede - The Drowners

This was their first big song in 1992 and what initially drew me to them. After the guitarist Bernard Butler left the band after their second or third album they just weren't as good as they were in the olden days.

Suede - My Dark Star

Suede - Together

These other two songs are b-sides. I recently rediscovered them and they remind me of the summer of 1997. There is something in "My Dark Star" that manages to be both discordant and melodic at the same time. And a certain raw energy (who says that?) in "Together."

Cover Me Badd

Royal City - Is This It?

Have you heard of The Strokes? They're this band from New York and I think they are going to save Rock and Roll. I got this from a blog called Copy, Right? devoted solely to cover songs. A lot of gems there but the links are only active for about a week. I missed the emotional content in The Strokes version and this cover version captures it nicely.

New Pinback

Pinback - Fortress

This is from the upcoming album which I think comes out in October. I bet if you heard this but didn't know who it was, you wouldn't be able to guess that it was Pinback.

Deliver Us

Charlie Daniels Band - Dueling Banjoes

Actually a pretty good little tune if it doesn't conjure images from a certain movie where some pals go on a river trip. I think the guy on the banjo looks like Thom Yorke.

Not Enough Notoriety

The Sugarplastic - The Runaround

The Sugarplastic - Here Comes Mr. Right

The Sugarplastic are releasing a new single on vinyl only every two months for the next two years. The whole project is called 7×7x7 and it's hard to get your hands on. One of these tracks is from 7×7x5 (Here Comes Mr. Right) and the other is from one of their old records. I have some other tracks if you're interested (dave@hobix.com or on SWAB).

Japanese Dancing

Halcali - Maachingu Maachi

I was listening to new tunes the other day in my room and when this came on, my head popped up from whatever I was doing and I said "What? Let's hear that again." I put it on repeat and for the next 25 minutes I danced in front of the mirror to this song. It was hot (no AC in my house) and I was sweatin'. This is so great. A little Japanese outfit. Can anyone translate?

There is also a Nintendo sound effect in the song. I think it's the sound Megaman makes when he jumps.
