Counterpoint #4
Guided By Voices - Optical Hopscotch
I actually really don't like most of this song. But the part I enjoy, the counterpoint part, makes it worth your while. It doesn't occur until the second time they sing the chorus and it not only redeems the entire song, but it also still gives a guy the chills.
This is from Do The Collapse which I got in Tahlequah, OK in the Fall of 1999. It was produced by Ric Ocasek and after that experience, Robert Pollard said he would never work with Ocasek again--I think largely because Ocasek had a no-drinking rule during studio sessions. And he just didn't like the sound of the album. Not lo-fi enough. If you listen to it you can hear the similarities to Weezer's Blue Album.
A few months later GBV came through SLC and I wanted to hear this song but no such. I remember Robert got drunk onstage and sounded really good. And he made a joke about how polygamy was cool. Jim MacPherson, who was the Breeders drummer, was their drummer at the time. While they were setting up he asked for some duct tape. Someone in the audience heard this and shouted "Jim MacTapeson" and Jim smiled.
I'm learning about the internet quite a bit but not enough to enable comments. Still figuring out.
